More Shoppers Will Engage in Their Communities on Small Business Saturday 2022

Thanksgiving weekend is fast approaching and after the turkey dinner and football, shopping is one of the holiday weekend’s time-honored traditions. Last year, the National Retail Federation reported nearly 180 Americans shopped over the five-day holiday weekend.

Sandwiched between Black Friday and Cyber Monday is Small Business Saturday, a shopping holiday introduced by American Express in 2010. It was designed to help small businesses compete against major retailers, the big boxes and category killers that have steadily and relentlessly siphoned away their business.

After two years of people’s holiday activities being curtailed by the pandemic, they are more than ready to meet their neighbors and friends on Main Street. Small Business Saturday is a great excuse to get out and about.

Not unexpectedly, people’s interest in participating in Small Business Saturday is much stronger this year than last. Over half of shoppers (53%) said they plan to shop local or eat at an independently-owned restaurant during this year’s Small Business Saturday. This is according to a survey among over 1,000 adults conducted by Teneo on behalf of Kabbage by American Express.

Your Ultimate Guide For Small Business Saturday

Over the past several years, Small Business Saturday evolved from a well-executed PR event to an officially recognized day by the U.S. Senate.

That leaves only 1 important question:

Is your small business positioned to capitalize on the biggest consumer spending weekend of the year?

You and your small business can benefit from the Small Business Saturday movement in a number of ways. Read on for the ultimate guide to leveraging the attention of Small Business Saturday to generate more customers for your small business.

The holiday season is quickly approaching, and if you’re a small business owner, that means busier workdays, larger crowds, and hiring seasonal employees just to keep up with demand! As you take on more workers – whether seasonal or permanent – it may benefit your business to hire an experienced small business attorney.

Here are the top three reasons why having a LegalShield small business legal plan during the holidays can protect your business:

  1. Protection: In general, hiring an attorney will help protect your small business, regardless of the time of year. During the holidays, however, you may find yourselves drafting new contracts to hire seasonal staff or preparing for potential damages, thefts, etc. A business attorney can assist you in keeping your business in line with local state and federal laws and regulations, especially in terms of hiring minors, designating full-time employees and contractors for tax purposes, and more.
  2. Providing Advice: Many small business attorneys can provide professional council on financial matters to help you save money, according to gmpopcorn.com. During the holiday season, for example, there are many requirements that govern how many hours seasonally employees can work, when they can work, and how much you need to compensate your workforce for clocking in during the holidays. If your business plans on hiring minors, requiring physical labor, or experiencing a higher risk of theft at your store, an experienced attorney will help you prepare for the worst, as well as provide expertise when questions or issues arise that could impact revenue and sales.
  3. Resolving Employee Conflicts: When it comes to seasonal employment, you may run into issues with short-term employees regarding contracts, payment, etc. This is where many small business owners end up losing money. Business.com recommends hiring a business attorney to help “facilitate the hiring process, administer worker’s compensation, draft up agreements for independent contractors, and help you safely fire employees without legal repercussions.”

Business Owners and Identity Theft

Identity theft has become one of the fastest growing crimes in America. Anyone can be affected, but business owners are frequently targeted. In fact, small business owners are one and a half times more likely to be the victims of identity fraud than the general population.

The traditional sources of personal information that’s used to compromise your financial accounts or make changes in your name have largely been replaced by fraudulent online activity. It’s still important to protect or destroy your physical documents and credit cards, but your online accounts have become a more common target.

Identity thieves are most interested in the personal information that would enable them to pass as you. This includes Social Security numbers, date of birth, mother’s maiden name and your existing account numbers at your financial institutions.

As a business owner, it’s important to take active steps to protect your personal and company information against unauthorized access and misuse.

Small Business Spotlight – Red Rocks Toffee Company

While living in Steamboat Springs in 2006, a friend made some toffee from a church cookbook, and knowing I love to cook, bake and experiment with my cooking, shared it with me. It was very good, but perhaps I could take it further… I asked for the recipe, and began the whimsical trials to make a toffee that was indeed mind-blowing. Having achieved some success with high-altitude baking, I wandered a touch with some of the elements, experimented and came up with a sweet almond symphony we have today. The fun part, I had no trouble finding friends and foodies who would test the toffee (and continue to do so in the name of quality assurance). It was with their encouragement, and perhaps their desire to have a ready supply of superior toffee that the Steamboat Toffee Company was formed. The summer of 2016 saw me moving to Denver (Littleton) full-time, and knowing I had a proven winner product in my hands. I launched a second brand – Red Rocks Toffee Company.
