December is National Identity Theft Prevention and Awareness Month – Are Your Clients’ Benefit Packages Prepared for Cyberattacks?

Did you know the majority of all data breaches in 2022 were the result of cyberattacks? Phishing schemes top the list as the main cause of these cyberattacks and social engineering tactics targeting employees are becoming the norm. With the increase in attacks, there is no surprise that recent consumer digital behavior data from IDShield found that 40 percent of people feel conducting life and business online is getting more dangerous.

December is known as National Identity Theft Awareness Month and while an active month for identity theft criminals, it is also a month to reflect and plan for the year ahead. As employers focus on security training programs for their employees. implementing an identity theft protection plan should also be included in their cybersecurity strategy. While 82 percent of those surveyed had familiarity with what cyber thieves are capable of, many of their digital behaviors make them prime targets for identity theft, including using public wi-fi.

New data from IDShield reveals people’s top digital habits that can lead to identity theft.

1. Lazy and overused passwords: Almost half (48%) use the same password for multiple accounts; 44% are storing their passwords insecurely; and 42% currently share their passwords with someone else.

2. Oversharing on social media: 91% of those surveyed have a social media account, and of that audience, 84% have at least one identifying element of their identity (e.g., an email, full name, age, birthday, location, school affiliation) included in their social media profile.

3. Accepting emails from unknown senders: 90% of respondents are wary of opening links from a sender they are not familiar with. However, fewer people are as concerned when it is coming from someone they know.

4. Trusting public Wi-Fi: 68% of participants said they would join the public Wi-Fi option putting them at risk of malicious hotspots, malware distribution, man-in-the-middle attacks and using an unencrypted network.

IDShield provides 360-degree monitoring and full-service restoration services, including assistance for pre-existing identity theft incidents. Plan participants recieve identity, credit and financial account monitoring as well as reputation management, device and online privacy services. In addition to the services IDShield provides, educational videos and content that can be provided to employers to help educate their employees on how they can best help protect their identity and online privacy.

The Growing Demand for Legal and IDT Benefits at the Workplace

An increasing number of employers plan to make changes to their benefits programs in the next year. It is well known that creating a benefit suite that provides meaningful and impactful benefits to today’s diverse workforce helps recruit and retain employees. Employers and employees have taken an interest in specific voluntary benefits over the years, specifically legal and IDT protection benefits and these benefits are expected to continue to grow in popularity,

Personal legal matters and identity theft (IDT) related issues are common however, offering them as benefits has in the past been overlooked. The pandemic has highlighted the need for such benefits however, not all legal and IDT plans are created equal and it is important to look for plans that provide the coverage needed for today’s challenges.

LegalShield has built and successfully maintains the only proprietary nationwide network of provider law firms. Participants are assigned a dedicated multi-service provider law firm. With the LegalShield mobile participants can call their provider law firm directly and even schedule a specific date/time for their consultation. With IDShield, participants can scan their social media accounts and review and delete any potentially reputational damaging content. IDShield also provides 360-degree identity monitoring including monitoring of social medai and financial accounts, device protection and full-service identity restoration.

‘Tis the Season for Holiday Travel Stress and Disruptions

LegalShield, the world’s largest platform for legal, identity and reputation management services, revealed today that 85% of Americans feel stressed about upcoming travel. And with nearly half of Americans planning to travel for Thanksgiving, the new study revealed the tension around what will likely be the busiest travel season since 2019.

In anticipation of flight delays, cancellations, and all the challenges that go with holiday travel, 19% of respondents are feeling “extremely” stressed. This is understandable as those who traveled during the previous holiday season (N=735) experienced the following:

    62% had a delayed flight

    34% reported a flight cancellation

34% were on an overbooked flight

29% missed a connecting flight due to a delay

    26% lost baggage

More than half (53%) were able to make it to their destination but arrived late

78% said it took as long as five hours to resolve the flight issue

Despite all the challenges they face, one-third of the survey respondents still do not know their legal rights from the airlines when they experience travel issues. Knowing your legal rights when traveling can make all the difference in terms of saving time and reducing stress. 38% said their stress level would improve if they had a dedicated advocate that could assist in case of flight disruptions.
