LegalShield Provides the Estate Planning Services Employees Need

August is National Make a Will Month and serves as a reminder for all of us of the importance of having a will. LegalShield recently conducted a survey that uncovered some surprising truths:

  • Will preparation evokes overwhelmingly positive emotions. Survey respondents expressed feelings of peace (40%), confidence (37%), and empowerment (26%) when contemplating the creation of their Will.
  • Despite these positive sentiments, a mere 41% of the general population currently possesses a Will.
  • The majority of those surveyed don’t know where to begin (39%) and plan to create a will or trust when they’re older (35%). Factors like cost (14%) or needing a lawyer (22%) play a strong role as well.
  • Yet, 49% of employees feel their employer should offer legal services.

This is precisely where LegalShield can help. We offer your clients the opportunity to provide their employees direct access to a dedicated provider law firm who will assist with personal legal matters such as will preparation.

When you consider the value that a will provides to an employee and their family, there is no question of the need for employers to offer a legal plan that includes will preparation. However, not all legal plans are created equal.

One of the many great benefits of LegalShield is that will preparation is included in the plan and can easily be prepared using the LegalShield mobile app. Wills are prepared and mailed to the participant within five business days of receiving all information.

To help employers educate employees on the importance of preparing their will and using their LegalShield benefit, we also offer virtual will workshops hosted by a LegalShield provider lawyer and supporting educational content including a video on the basics of estate planning and a new estate planning guide.

5 Tips for Closing Benefits Communication Gaps

Did you know, 52% of employees said they do not feel they receive enough communication regarding their benefits? LegalShield was recently featured in a SHRM’s article on how to improve the benefit communication gap between employers and employees. In a recent LegalShield study it was found that 47 percent of those surveyed didn’t know enough about each voluntary benefit to make an informed enrollment decision. However, the majority of employees (81%) would welcome more information about their company-sponsored benefits throughout the year. This is a great opportunity!

The top five requests LegalShield’s Provide Law Firms receive from plan participants fall into five main areas of law. Some common examples LegalShield plan participants experience include estate planning needs such as Will preparation, billing disputes, adoption, refinancing of a home, and legal assistance with speeding tickets.

Tips for Closing Benefits Communication Gaps:

  1. Use different messaging and channels for different cohorts.
  2. Use the entire calendar year to educate people in very small, specific ways.
  3. Be attuned to and communicate with employees during major life events.
  4. Consider the role that employee resource groups (ergs) might play.
  5. Pay attention to timing, (employee) costs and decision support tools.

HR and benefits leaders should strive to provide information far enough in advance of open enrollment to give employees time to digest and understand it, but not so far in advance that they can’t do anything with the information.

As part of LegalShield’s implementation process, LegalShield provides a pre-and post-enrollment marketing and communication strategy to boost plan participation and overall utilization of the benefit(s). Our service-focused and hassle-free implementation process allows new groups to be implemented in as little as 2-3 weeks. We are also compatible with over 100 enrollment platforms, including Employee Navigator, PlanSource, BenefitFirst and Ease.
